In 1910, Leonard Keith and Joseph "Cub" Coates were photographed together as two young men whose tenderness toward one another was legible even then, even in an era that had no language to protect them. These images, fragile and intimate, survived. This reliquary honors what survived with them.
Tate restores motion to these still photographs, not to fabricate history, but to imagine its texture: the small gestures, the quiet proximity, the ordinary tenderness of two people in love. Sealed under glass, Len and Cub are held here the way memory holds what it refuses to release.
