In Service, In Secret

From the Civil War through the Second World War, queer men and women served their country in uniform, with courage, with devotion, and almost always in silence. The intimacy they carried was not permitted to exist in the open. Many took it to their graves.

Working from archival photographs, Tate animates these soldiers, nurses, and sailors back into a gentler history, one where a hand finds another hand, where a kiss is possible, where tenderness is not a crime. The movements are small and deliberate: a held gaze, an embrace, a moment of recognition between two people who knew exactly what they risked by feeling what they felt.

This reliquary does not rewrite history. It restores what history stole, returning to these men and women the private lives they were owed, sealed now under glass, witnessed at last
